Dear Business Owner or Manager,

Suddenly everyone is awake to what's happening with business marketing - and it's good news (for a change) for business owners and marketing managers.

Instead of spending thousands on Yellow Pages and other traditional marketing methods, you can spend a fraction of that on the new, highly effective form of marketing called Social Media, and get a far higher return on your investment.

Before we go into what Social Media is all about, let's consider the following:

  • Inc Magazine recently published the following
    • "91 per cent of all businesses in 2010 are attempting to use Social Media."
    • "85 per cent of all those who have used it say they got a "buzz" from doing so." (In other words, it was highly successful.)
  • Forrester Research says that 99 per cent of retailers are planning an online presence, mainly on Facebook, by 2011.
  • Pepsi Cola this year (2010) cancelled their Super Bowl advertising blitz (a regular feature of the Super Bowl up to now) and instead are using Social Media as their main marketing system.
  • If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest in the world. It now has over 400 million users and that number is increasing by the day. Check out these other Facebook statistics:
    • Each Facebook user spends an average of 55 minutes per day on the site, which equates to a total of 8 billion minutes spent on Facebook per day!
    • Around 1 billion messages are sent through Facebook's chat program every day!
    • 50% of Facebook's active users log on to Facebook every day!
    • 3 million users update their status every day!
    • Facebook is now overtaking Google in terms of page views with 39 billion page views per month!

There's a new saying in business - you (or your company) are what your Google results tell people you are.

Until recently that meant paying thousands to experts in search engine optimisation and web designers. But with the advent of Social Media - sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Propeller and Mixx - that is history.

You can now generate more publicity and targeted visitors to your web site or blog by posting content to these sites than you can by paying thousands to experts to try and gain a high ranking in the search engines.

But there's a three-fold problem:
  • Knowing how to manipulate these social media sites so as to gain the best coverage of your company and what it is doing
  • Finding the time to learn the skills to do this, or alternatively finding a new employee (at a high price) who has learned these new skills
  • The number of people who are skilled at using these social media sites so as to yield the best results is tiny compared to the demand for their services.
